I am originally from Cape Breton where there is little separation between politics, religion and family. I grew up living, breathing and believing in the honour of serving government and community. When I was born, my father was a rural member of the Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly and being a devoted representative, he had to do double-duty trying to balance his commitment to his constituency with his responsibilities as a father. I often tagged along with him for ribbon-cutting ceremonies, kitchen-table meetings with community leaders, funerals around the riding… you name it. For years, I thought I had the largest family in the world, and that these funerals were for family members I just hadn’t met yet. Devotion to community and family was one in the same for him. I like that. It makes sense to me.
For more than 25 years, I have worked for the federal government. For federal cabinet Ministers on Parliament Hill, as a diplomat to the Benelux at the Canadian Embassy in The Hague, and with senior executives in a long list of government departments. In every role, I navigated and built strong relationships with community, industry, stakeholders and media. And I’m very proud that in every role I delivered strategic results that made a real difference.
I have been in and around government all my life. I am passionate about it and believe that Canadians enjoy the highest standard of living in the world. I understand the role government plays in our lives and how it impacts and improves our lives on a daily basis. I also know how complex its inner workings can seem when you are on the outside looking in.
I am able to decipher the language of government and politics to help you and your organization succeed. My political fluency extends to government at all levels—municipal, provincial, national and international—and is rooted in a belief that everyone matters. I know how to navigate the system at every touch point. I understand everything from language and relationships, to etiquette and expectations.
My entire career, and in fact, my entire upbringing, has prepared me for the challenge of operating my own boutique government relations and communications consultancy. In the same way my father was so proud to serve his constituents, I feel the very same way about my clients.
